The mechanic measured here is shape-specific citation: whether a brand's own domain is cited at the same rate across different buyer question shapes in the same category, or only in some of them. Measured against the Machine Relations Index (MRI) release machine_relations_index_public_view_v2.0, methodology mri_score_v2.0, generated 2026-09-23, six named wellness and supplement brand domains — naturemade.com, vitaminshoppe.com, gnc.com, nordicnaturals.com, liquid-iv.com and nowfoods.com — hold citation ranks in the Consumer Health category's x_vs_y (head-to-head comparison) segment that do not match their ranks in the best_x (best tools) and top_list (ranked roundup) segments, over the 2026-05-10 to 2026-09-23 window.

This is a cross-section, not an experiment. It reports what six engines cited over a fixed 125-day window. It makes no claim that any page, placement, schema change or campaign caused a citation rate, and it does not compare a before to an after. Para Labs publishes it as a measured baseline that a later experiment can move against.

Nature Made is cited in one of 131 observed roundup answers and twenty of 131 observed comparison answers — the same category, the same window, a twentyfold difference in citation rate depending on which question shape the buyer asked. Vitamin Shoppe shows the same pattern in reverse order of severity: last-place in best-tools answers, sixteenth of 217 in comparisons. GNC is the one brand of the six that shows up strongest in best-tools rather than comparison answers, which is itself evidence that no single question shape structurally favors this category's brands — the shape that wins is brand-specific, not category-wide. Both ends of that spread sit in a measurable structure: across the 43 published shopping segments in this release, the median segment cites 233 distinct domains and repeats only 13 of them in at least one answer in ten, while 44.4 percent of the pool is cited exactly once. Nature Made's top_list position, rank 273 of 338 on a single cited run, is inside that single-citation tail — 143 of the 338 domains cited in Consumer Health roundups were cited exactly once. Engine presence is not the variable

Vitamin Shoppe is cited by all six engines and still sits at rank 294 of 298 in best-tools answers. Being reachable by every engine did not carry it into that shape's top ranks; the comparison shape is where the same domain's citations concentrate.

Read the source-role label before benchmarking against it

All six domains above are filed under the Index's uncategorized_source role, not vendor_owned. That label describes a classification gap, not a market fact: in the current release only one domain in the entire Consumer Health category carries the vendor_owned role, against 1,173 of the category's 1,304 cited domains sitting in uncategorized_source. A brand comparing itself against a "vendor-owned" leaderboard for this category is comparing against almost nothing, because the category's own brand and retailer domains are not the domains that role currently classifies. The citation ranks and rates in the tables above are direct reads of the Index's per-domain, per-segment data regardless of source-role label; the label itself should not be read as evidence about who operates a domain.

What a brand-side operator can take from this

Three things follow from the cross-section, and none of them is a causal claim.

  1. A single visibility number hides which shape is winning. Nature Made's overall citation rate (0.19%, still below the confidence floor) gives no signal that the same domain holds rank 9 of 217 in comparison answers specifically.
  2. Measure per shape before changing anything. A brand that only tracks "best tools" mentions would read Nature Made, Nordic Naturals, Liquid I.V. and NOW Foods as effectively absent from Consumer Health AI answers, and miss that two of the six hold real comparison-shape standing.
  3. Do not benchmark against the vendor_owned class in this category. With one domain classified that way, the class is not a usable competitive set here; the per-domain, per-segment rank is the readable signal.

Limits

This is one release. Segments below the evidence floor publish no rate, so "not cited" in the tables above means zero cited runs in a published segment during the window, not a claim about a brand's visibility outside the Index. The Index runs the market's buyer questions, not queries about any one brand, so it cannot report whether a specific brand's own pages are performing. Citation rate is not traffic, ranking or revenue. Four of the six brands above carry a collecting confidence grade on their overall rate, meaning the domain has not yet cleared the Index's evidence floor for a stable overall number; the segment-level ranks in the tables are read directly from the release's published per-segment data, which the Index does publish once a segment itself clears its own floor, independent of the domain's overall grade. Nothing here establishes that a source-side change moves a segment; that requires a paired design with a frozen baseline, and the release identifier above is what a later read must be compared against.

What is a question shape? A buyer intent pattern the Machine Relations Index groups queries into. best_x is an open-ended best-tools question, top_list is a ranked roundup, and x_vs_y is a head-to-head comparison. The Index also tracks how-buyers-choose, is-it-worth-it and problem-first shapes.

Does "not cited" mean the brand is invisible in AI answers generally? No. It means the domain had zero cited runs in that specific published segment during the window. The brand may be cited in other segments, other categories, or in queries the Index does not monitor.

Why would a comparison question cite a brand's own domain more than a best-tools question? The cross-section reports the pattern, not the cause. A plausible mechanism is that head-to-head questions pull toward primary specification sources — ingredient lists, dosage tables, price comparisons a brand publishes on its own product pages — but that is a hypothesis this design cannot test. Google's product structured-data documentation describes exactly that kind of primary-source data (price, availability, review ratings) as something a brand can expose directly through structured data or Merchant Center feeds, which a comparison answer could draw on (Google Search Central).

How many engines does this cover? Does a low overall citation rate mean a supplement brand is breaking any rule by appearing or not appearing in these answers?
